For the benefit of anyone who’s young and cool enough to know what ‘Netflix ‘n’ chill’ means (yeah, I know – stop laughing at the back), I’m referring to the process of sitting down on the couch, grabbing the TV remote, and flicking through the channels to see what’s on at that moment in time. I’m used to watching TV in the old-fashioned way. There is, however, one huge issue with all of this. BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and even Channel 5 are all very well represented on Apple TV their apps are all brilliantly put together and a joy to use. Things get a little better when it comes to the aforementioned terrestrial apps. Watch anything featuring a dark scene or black background, and there’s more pixelation than a broken YouTube stream. Oh, and the image quality from the Now TV stream is hideous, too. Scrap that – it’s utterly crap the Now TV app is buggy, poorly designed, and offers the most useless TV planner I’ve ever seen. The user experience also leaves a lot to be desired in the wake of Sky’s admittedly brilliant operating system. While you can pause and rewind live TV, you can’t record anything. It isn’t, however, Sky in the traditional sense. Now TV is a streaming service that provides access to many of Sky’s channels, including their entertainment package, Sky Sports, and Sky Movies. I’ve also signed us up to Now TV (which is, ironically, owned by Sky) and ensured every terrestrial service is represented on the Apple TV Home Screen via their corresponding apps. Our TV is now fed just one image signal – that rather lovely 4K HDR feed from the Apple TV. Given that I’d vowed to dive wholeheartedly into the world of the Apple TV after mercilessly panning it in 2021, Sky simply had to go. It also has zero tie-in with the Apple TV (more on that later). The problem with Sky is that for all of its technical brilliance and ease of use, it is stupidly expensive. It has been around for donkey’s years and, bar some cable alternatives, is the most popular way for people in the UK to gain access to as many TV channels as possible. anyone who doesn’t live in the UK), Sky is a massive broadcast company that’s owned by Comcast. This is what I’ve learned so far, what I’d like to see in the future, and why I need your help. But it has also revealed some inherent issues with the ‘all-in-on-Apple TV’ strategy – particularly if you live in the UK. I did that a few weeks back, and it has been a fascinating journey. It’s hard not to write about it, though – particularly when you make the big switch and begin using the Apple TV as your main source of living room entertainment. Yeah, I know… another Apple TV blog from yours truly.

In March this year, after I created a flyer for a Field Day/Be Well show, Doug Carrion (Field Day, Dag Nasty, Descendents) contacted me which then led to me creating the artwork for 2.0. Have you heard from any of the bands/musicians you’ve covered yet? Up until then it had been more of a mix, some hardcore bands but also other bands that I was listening to at the time. It was then that my number of followers began to rise quite rapidly and in 2019 I began working a lot with the Belgian band, Slow Crush, on various posters, shirts and and eventually, an EP cover.īut it wasn’t until this year that I began to concentrate almost solely on hardcore shows. So that little bit of recognition drove me on to produce more posters, sometimes one every day at some points. Each one was like a virtual pat on the back. I was only getting 15-20 likes a poster, but I appreciated every one of those likes. I was also listening to a lot of Nothing around this time so I began creating posters of their old shows and that was when I got a little bit of recognition, probably due to the fact that Nothing have such a large fanbase. I still wasn’t really planning on taking it much further - I just liked doing it as a hobby but I did enjoy the thought of more people seeing them. In late 2018, I started to upload a few of these Bandcamp covers to Instagram. I did this in my spare time for about 2 years. I put the posters on Facebook and they got a handful of ‘Likes.' But the band also happened to see them and that quickly led to me doing a lot of work for them, designing multiple cover images for archived live shows on Bandcamp and layouts for numerous DVD copies of their reunion shows. I had been a big fan of this band in the pre-hardcore days back when I was 15, 16 years old. In late 2016, just for my own enjoyment, I designed some posters based on a UK band that had just completed a 20-year reunion tour. The flyer idea had very small beginnings. Listening to music has been my one constant enjoyment and I have always thought how great it would be to have a job in the music industry, especially on the artwork side. How and when did you get the idea to start this flyer redesign campaign? I stayed there 8 years until the business closed down then moved into my current design job where I’ve been since 2002. It was probably 4 years before I got my own computer and I picked up how to use the programs day by day on the job. The first few years at the agency were in the days of cut and paste - the one computer operator would print out blocks of text and some photos then I’d cut it all up and arrange it on paper with a scalpel and spray mount. Strangely though, for an artist, I didn’t do too great in my school art exams! However, when I left school I studied a 2-year course in graphics and during the second year I was given a work placement at an advertising agency, which led to a job offer. I was pretty good at drawing from an early age and not very good at much else so it was clear I was always going to end up in some sort of art career. I’ve been a graphic designer all my working life. Are you formally trained, or did you learn on your own? Tell me a bit about your graphic design background. Like most people, I found that scanning the thank you lists and the production credits practically told me what to buy next. And on my next trip I added Can I Say, Milo Goes to College, and No Control. On my next trip to the record store I bought Wig Out at Denko's and Boogada Boogada Boogada. I can’t really remember what bands were on it now but I do remember that Dag Nasty was one of them. One day, an older friend of mine gave me a mix tape. It was when I was 17 (way back in 1989) - at the time I was mostly listening to the likes of TAD, Mudhoney, Seaweed. What were some of the bands that initially sparked your interest in hardcore punk? I spoke with Simon about the project, and his passion for the bands and scenes he's paying tribute to. While it's always fun to check out OG punk flyers on the internet, these newly designed ones deserve your attention. On his Instagram page, Simon has been taking old hardcore show flyers and reimagining them through the lens of his graphic design touch. The UK-based graphic designer has channeled his love for hardcore into a series of images that recently got No Echo's attention. Simon Tripcony is practicing the classic art of taking something old and creating something new and exciting out of it. I would actually just have a cheaper EA price and then up the cost once done. I'm not suggesting that EA titles should have a 'discount' for the entire time leading into full release. I almost bought The Stomping Ground before it disappeared. When EA exploded as a concept there was huge backlash against developers who sold great art work and ideas and then vanished. I also understand that refunds are a thing but for an EA that is still releasing features, two hours is no where near enough time to know. Higher cost equals greater expectation and for those that have been burned before this often translates into reluctance and therefore no buy in. You are paying someone for an incomplete product after all so a certain amount of faith is required. The reality is that if you wait for an EA to be 1.0 you are paying for a fully featured game anyway so why shouldn't you pay more? I still think EA should be cheaper to encourage people to take a chance on the developed based on faith. I remember the grumbles from people when it was announced the price would go up as of 1.0. I bought Minecraft around the start of beta. I can think of a lot of counter arguments to my statements. /r/GamePhysics - Clips of game physics shining and glitchingĭesign based on /r/FlatBlue created by /u/creesch./r/gaming4gamers - middle ground between purely-for-fun and more serious subreddits./r/GamingLeaksAndRumours - Leaks and Rumors.Posting unmarked spoilers will result in removal and warning, and posting spoilers with malicious intent will result in a ban. In other words, if you disable Turbo Boost, the Mac battery may last longer, but the computer will be noticeably slower. Whether or not that is worth the trade off depends on your use case, but in some select situations where performance is less important than a battery lasting longer, it could be useful.Īnecdotally I noticed nearly an hour increase in potential battery life when using the app to toggle Turbo Boost off on a new model MacBook Pro, but some users have reported more dramatic changes.
